Undead Legacy Mod

Undead Legacy Mod for 7 Days to Die

Undead Legacy is one of the most ambitious overhaul mods ever built for 7 Days to Die. Created by Subquake, the mod transforms the base game into a deeper, slower, more granular survival experience, with over 1,500 craftable items, a full progression overhaul, weapon-handling refinements, and a research-driven schematic system that rewards careful play. After more than three years pinned to Alpha 20.7, Subquake shipped an experimental build for 7 Days to Die V2.6 in August 2026.

Undead Legacy on 7 Days to Die 2.6 is real, and it is experimental

Updated 20 August 2026. For years the honest answer here was "UL is frozen on Alpha 20.7, there is no modern build." That changed on 17 August 2026, when Subquake released an experimental Undead Legacy for the current game. The community reaction tells you how long people had waited: the announcement thread on r/7daystodie passed 250 upvotes in three days, with comments like "I almost lost hope" and "been waiting years."

There are now two Undead Legacy branches, and picking the wrong one is the single most common way people get stuck:

| Branch | UL version | Requires | Status |

|---|---|---|---|

| Experimental (new) | 2.7.11, dated 2026.08.20 | 7 Days to Die V2.6 b14 | Actively updated, expect frequent builds |

| Stable (legacy) | 2.6.17, dated 2022.11.25 | 7 Days to Die A20.7 b1 | Unchanged since 2022, still perfectly playable |

Both are on the official Undead Legacy download page. The experimental download ships in two parts and you need both.

Careful: "UL 2.6" and "game 2.6" are different things

This mod's version numbers collide with the game's, and it trips up almost everyone. UL 2.6.17 is the old build that runs on Alpha 20.7. The build that runs on game 2.6 is UL 2.7.x. So "Undead Legacy 2.6" is ambiguous: if someone means the mod version they mean the 2022 legacy build, and if they mean the game version they mean the new experimental one. When you download, match against the "Requires" line on the download page, never against the mod's own number.

What experimental actually means here

Subquake pushed 2.7.08 on 18 August and 2.7.11 by 20 August, three builds in about two days. That is healthy for a fresh release and it also means: expect bugs, expect your save to break between builds, and do not start a long community playthrough on it and assume it will survive to the stable release. If you want a UL run that will not move under you, the A20.7 line is still there and still complete.

Installation is genuinely fiddly right now

The new build is not in the 7D2D Mod Launcher yet, so it is a manual install, and plenty of people have bounced off it. The most-shared community walkthrough opens with the author saying they and many others "tried to install the new version without any success" before working it out. It is a two-part download that has to be assembled correctly against a specific game build (V2.6 b14), which is exactly the class of job a managed host should be doing for you rather than leaving to each player.

Origins and design intent

Subquake started Undead Legacy as a personal alternative to the direction the official game was taking, with a clear thesis: 7 Days to Die deserves a more serious, more granular survival arc. The mod grew from a small content pack into one of the largest community efforts in the 7DTD scene. When The Fun Pimps shifted toward 2.6, Subquake made the deliberate call to lock UL to A20.7 rather than chase every core update, preserving the design coherence and giving the mod a stable foundation.

Gameplay Features

Undead Legacy reshapes nearly every system the base game ships:

  • 1,500+ items, vastly expanded item variety across food, weapons, gear, materials, and consumables.

  • Schematic-based progression, most advanced recipes are gated behind schematics found in the world, not just leveling.

  • Weapon handling overhaul, more nuanced damage models, weapon condition curves, and ammo crafting.

  • Vehicle paint and customization, full vehicle expansion with paint, decals, and parts.

  • Lockpicking system, replaces the vanilla "smash to open" with a real skill-checked minigame.

  • Harvesting overhaul, gathering nodes have different yields and require correct tools for max efficiency.

  • Character classes, choose a starting archetype that shapes early-game progression.

Survival realism

UL is unapologetically realism-leaning. Items have weight, your character actually slows when overburdened. Food spoils on different timetables. Crafting requires the right workstation, not just a flat menu. Weapons degrade meaningfully and have to be cleaned or repaired. The pacing is slower than vanilla, Subquake's design philosophy is that survival shouldn't be a sprint to mid-game gear; it should be a long-form arc where every choice matters.

Quality-of-life enhancements

Despite the realism, UL ships substantial QOL improvements:

  • Better organized loot lists, finding what you need is more predictable than vanilla

  • Improved UI, clearer category sorting, better icons, more readable tooltips

  • Recipe research tooltips, see exactly what you need to learn the next tier

  • Smart inventory categorization

  • Cleaner waypoint and quest tracking

New challenges and enemies

UL expands the zombie roster meaningfully:

  • New zombie variants with distinct behaviors (Berserkers, Wraiths, Chargers)

  • Difficulty scaling that reacts to player progression more nuanced than vanilla GameStage

  • Custom raid mechanics at horde nights, UL's bloodmoon is harder than vanilla

  • Endgame bosses that require coordinated play and tier-3+ gear

Crafting and workstations

The crafting tree is fully reworked:

  • New tier of advanced workstations (Advanced Forge, Specialized Workbench, etc.)

  • Schematic-locked progression, find or buy the schematic, then unlock the recipe

  • Tiered material gates, you can't skip from stone tools to titanium without progressing through iron and steel

  • Stainless steel, lead batteries, and precision tools all return as craftable items

Undead Legacy is free to use. Subquake distributes the legacy A20.7 line through the 7D2D Mod Launcher v3, and both lines through direct download on the official UL site. The new experimental build is direct-download only for now. Some XML and basic gameplay assets are freely usable; certain custom assets, UI textures, weapon models, and audio carry EULAs that prohibit redistribution. If you're hosting an UL server, point your players at the official launcher rather than packaging the assets yourself.

Recent updates

As of 20 August 2026 the two live builds are UL 2.7.11 experimental (requires game V2.6 b14, dated 2026.08.20) and UL 2.6.17 stable (requires A20.7 b1, dated 2022.11.25). The experimental line is moving fast: 2.7.08 landed on 18 August and 2.7.11 two days later.

For server admins the operational rule is unchanged in shape, only in numbers: the server build, the mod build and every client must match exactly. Mixing UL 2.7.x with an A20.7 server, or letting one player stay on 2.7.08 while the server moves to 2.7.11, produces connection failures rather than a helpful error. Because the experimental line is updating every few days, decide deliberately whether you are tracking it or holding a build, and tell your players which.

Installing it

Experimental (game V2.6):

  1. Set your 7 Days to Die client to the build the mod requires, currently V2.6 b14

  2. Download both parts of UL 2.7.11 from ul.subquake.com/download

  3. Assemble them per Subquake's instructions. It is not in the Mod Launcher yet, so this is manual

  4. For a dedicated server, install the matching game build plus the same mod files, and make sure every client runs the identical build

Stable (legacy A20.7):

  1. Pin your 7DTD client to A20.7 in Steam (right-click 7DTD, Properties, Betas, choose alpha20.7)

  2. Open the 7D2D Mod Launcher v3 (the legacy version, not v5)

  3. Install Undead Legacy 2.6.17 from the launcher

  4. For dedicated server: matching A20.7 build + UL 2.6.17 + BepInEx + doorstop_config.ini

If you are hosting with Supercraft, we handle the pinning for you on either branch, including the two-part experimental assembly, so your players only need the matching client build.
