Undead Legacy Mod

Undead Legacy Mod for 7 Days to Die

Undead Legacy is one of the most ambitious overhaul mods ever built for 7 Days to Die. Created by Subquake, the mod transforms the base game into a deeper, slower, more granular survival experience — with over 1,500 craftable items, a full progression overhaul, weapon-handling refinements, and a research-driven schematic system that rewards careful play. UL is pinned to Alpha 20.7 as its long-term stable platform, treated as a legacy branch rather than a 1.0+ port.

Origins and design intent

Subquake started Undead Legacy as a personal alternative to the direction the official game was taking, with a clear thesis: 7 Days to Die deserves a more serious, more granular survival arc. The mod grew from a small content pack into one of the largest community efforts in the 7DTD scene. When The Fun Pimps shifted toward 1.0/2.x, Subquake made the deliberate call to lock UL to A20.7 rather than chase every core update — preserving the design coherence and giving the mod a stable foundation.

Gameplay Features

Undead Legacy reshapes nearly every system the base game ships:

  • 1,500+ items — vastly expanded item variety across food, weapons, gear, materials, and consumables.

  • Schematic-based progression — most advanced recipes are gated behind schematics found in the world, not just leveling.

  • Weapon handling overhaul — more nuanced damage models, weapon condition curves, and ammo crafting.

  • Vehicle paint and customization — full vehicle expansion with paint, decals, and parts.

  • Lockpicking system — replaces the vanilla "smash to open" with a real skill-checked minigame.

  • Harvesting overhaul — gathering nodes have different yields and require correct tools for max efficiency.

  • Character classes — choose a starting archetype that shapes early-game progression.

Survival realism

UL is unapologetically realism-leaning. Items have weight, your character actually slows when overburdened. Food spoils on different timetables. Crafting requires the right workstation, not just a flat menu. Weapons degrade meaningfully and have to be cleaned or repaired. The pacing is slower than vanilla — Subquake's design philosophy is that survival shouldn't be a sprint to mid-game gear; it should be a long-form arc where every choice matters.

Quality-of-life enhancements

Despite the realism, UL ships substantial QOL improvements:

  • Better organized loot lists — finding what you need is more predictable than vanilla

  • Improved UI — clearer category sorting, better icons, more readable tooltips

  • Recipe research tooltips — see exactly what you need to learn the next tier

  • Smart inventory categorization

  • Cleaner waypoint and quest tracking

New challenges and enemies

UL expands the zombie roster meaningfully:

  • New zombie variants with distinct behaviors (Berserkers, Wraiths, Chargers)

  • Difficulty scaling that reacts to player progression more nuanced than vanilla GameStage

  • Custom raid mechanics at horde nights — UL's bloodmoon is harder than vanilla

  • Endgame bosses that require coordinated play and tier-3+ gear

Crafting and workstations

The crafting tree is fully reworked:

  • New tier of advanced workstations (Advanced Forge, Specialized Workbench, etc.)

  • Schematic-locked progression — find or buy the schematic, then unlock the recipe

  • Tiered material gates — you can't skip from stone tools to titanium without progressing through iron and steel

  • Stainless steel, lead batteries, and precision tools all return as craftable items

Undead Legacy is free to use. Subquake distributes the mod through the 7D2D Mod Launcher v3 (the legacy launcher pinned to A20.7-era mods) and through direct download via the official UL site. Some XML and basic gameplay assets are freely usable; certain custom assets, UI textures, weapon models, and audio carry EULAs that prohibit redistribution. If you're hosting an UL server, point your players at the official launcher rather than packaging the assets yourself.

Recent updates

The current stable Undead Legacy build is 2.6.17 on 7 Days to Die A20.7. Subquake's update cadence on UL is slower and more deliberate than other overhauls — patches focus on stability fixes and balance refinements rather than chasing core game updates. The deliberate freeze on A20.7 means UL is treated as a "branch-pinned" mod, with its own long-term roadmap independent of TFP's V1.0+/2.x cycle.

For server admins, this means don't try to mix UL 2.6.17 with current 7DTD V1.0+ / 2.x. UL needs its own dedicated A20.7 server build, BepInEx, and matching doorstop config — see the launcher v3 setup flow.

How to install Undead Legacy

For self-hosters:

  1. Pin your 7DTD client to A20.7 in Steam (right-click 7DTD → Properties → Betas → choose alpha20.7)

  2. Open the 7D2D Mod Launcher v3 (the legacy version, not v5)

  3. Install Undead Legacy 2.6.17 from the launcher

  4. For dedicated server: install matching A20.7 7DTD build + UL 2.6.17 + BepInEx + doorstop_config.ini

If you're hosting with Supercraft, we handle the A20.7 + UL 2.6.17 pinning for you. Your players just need the matching client bundle from launcher v3.
