7 Days To Die Self-Host vs Paid Hosting — Honest Calculator

Plug in real numbers — VPS cost, your time-value, skill level, modpack load. The calculator shows the full annual cost of self-hosting (cloud VPS or home machine) including time, power, patch breakage, and recovery friction — versus paid hosting. We'll tell you when self-hosting is the right call.

Your situation

What's an hour of your free time worth? Default $20/hr. Set to 0 if you genuinely don't mind tinkering.

Self-host parameters

Default $20 — Hetzner CCX13 (4 vCPU / 16 GB) — minimum for vanilla + QOL with 4-8 players. Overhauls (Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy) push to $30+ tier (CCX23). Verify pricing.

How we calculate

The math is intentionally simple and conservative — every assumption is editable above. Time costs are based on real reports from r/7daystodie, r/admincraft, and Hetzner / DigitalOcean tutorials. Sources:

  • VPS pricing baseline — Hetzner CCX13 dedicated vCPU plan at €15.59/mo (≈ $19 USD). For Darkness Falls and Undead Legacy, CCX23 is the minimum. Source: hetzner.com/cloud
  • 7DTD dedicated server requirements — vanilla 4 vCPU + 6 GB RAM for 4-8 players; modded overhauls 4 vCPU + 12-16 GB. Bloodmoon spikes can push 6+ GB. Source: TFP forums
  • Setup time estimates — vanilla beginner 4-6 h, intermediate 2-3 h, pro 1 h. Modded overhaul setup adds 2-4 h regardless of skill (mod folder upload, version pinning, conflict resolution).
  • Patch / update breakage — TFP pushes ~2 server-breaking updates per major version per year. Modded servers add another ~1-2 modpack-side breakages per quarter. Expect 4-6 hours of recovery time per year on overhauls.
  • Power cost (home option) — 80 W average draw (7DTD is heavier than Palworld) × 24 × 30 = 58 kWh/month × $0.15/kWh ≈ $9 USD or 35-40 PLN. EU rates higher.

This calculator does not bake in: DDoS-mitigation, hardware failure, ISP upload bandwidth (7DTD needs ~5-12 Mbps up at 8 players, more for bloodmoon), or the value of your weekend when bloodmoon crashes the server mid-horde. Add those manually if they apply.

Frequently asked

Is 7 Days To Die self-hosting actually cheaper?

Pure cash-out: a $5-10/mo VPS will technically run a vanilla 4-player server. But that VPS chokes on bloodmoon and is undersized once you load Darkness Falls or Undead Legacy. Modpack patch breakage averages 4-6 hours of recovery per year — that wipes the savings unless you value your time at zero or you genuinely enjoy the homelab project.

What VPS specs does 7DTD actually need?

Vanilla 4-8 players: 4 vCPU + 6-8 GB RAM minimum. Modded overhauls (Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy, War3zuk): 4 vCPU + 12-16 GB. Hetzner's CCX13 (4 dedicated vCPU, 16 GB) at ~€15.59/mo is the cheapest mainstream option for vanilla. Overhauls need CCX23 ($30+). Underspeccing causes the dreaded freeze when zombies path on bloodmoon.

Can I run a 7DTD server on my home PC?

Yes if you have an always-on machine with 12+ GB free RAM, your ISP gives you a public IP (or accept DDNS/tunnel friction), and you accept that hardware failure means hours of recovery. Power cost on a 16 GB mini-PC running 7DTD 24/7 is about $9-12/month. The calculator above adds this in. NUCs from 2020-2022 are popular but the 8 GB models choke on overhauls.

What about modpack updates and patch breakage?

Bigger pain than vanilla VPS hosting suggests. Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy, and War3zuk all push updates that require version-pinning your client AND server in lockstep. Self-host: you handle every update manually, including resolving conflicts and copying mod folders via SFTP. Paid hosting on Supercraft pre-bakes the major modpacks — one click pulls the right server-side build that matches the modpack's current client version.

Why does the calculator default time-value to $20/hr?

That's roughly the median US net wage. If you genuinely don't mind tinkering or this is a hobby project, set it to 0 — the calculator will then compare on cash cost only and self-host wins for most situations. The $20/hr default catches people who under-estimate the opportunity cost of their weekend lost to a bloodmoon-crash recovery.

What about backups, EAC, and CSMM?

Self-host: every backup, every EAC verify, every CSMM connection is your responsibility. Set up cron rsync backups of SaveGames/Region files. Paid hosting on Supercraft includes daily off-server backups, EAC handling, and CSMM hosting free for customers — see /csmm.

Is the 2-day money-back enough to test paid hosting?

Yes for vanilla and most QOL setups — they spin up in 2 minutes. For overhauls, the install can take 10-20 minutes the first time (downloading modpack assets) and you'll want a couple of bloodmoons to validate performance. 2 days is enough for that test cycle.
