Is 7 Days to Die Cross-Platform?
So, you and your buddies are itching to survive the zombie hordes in 7 Days to Die. Awesome choice! But there’s always that one friend who’s rocking a different platform. Cue the big question: Is 7 Days to Die cross-platform? Let’s break it down and give you the straight answer for 2024.
The Short Answer: Sadly, No (With a Big ‘But’)
Alright, here’s the deal. As of right now, 7 Days to Die does not offer full cross-platform play between PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) and consoles (PlayStation and Xbox). This means if you’re on PC and your friend is on PlayStation, you won’t be able to team up and bash zombie brains together. Bummer, right?
Why No Cross-Platform? A Tale of Two Versions
The main reason behind the lack of cross-platform functionality lies in the different versions of the game. 7 Days to Die on PC is much further along in development than the console versions. Think of it like this: the PC version is constantly getting updates, new features, and gameplay tweaks. The console versions… well, they’re kinda stuck in the past.
The console versions, initially handled by Telltale Games, suffered a pretty significant setback when Telltale went under. This left the console versions without updates for a long time. While a new publisher, has stepped in to revive the console versions, they are still behind the PC version.
These differences in versions mean that the gameplay, features, and even the game world are drastically different. Trying to connect players from these vastly different versions would be a coding nightmare and lead to a seriously unbalanced and frustrating experience.
The “But”: Console Version Revival is Coming
Now for that “but” I promised! There is hope on the horizon for console players. As I mentioned, a new publisher is working on bringing the console version of 7 Days to Die up to par with the PC version. This means a complete overhaul, a new engine, and a whole lot of catching up.
The hope is that eventually, once the console versions are closer in line with the PC version, cross-platform play might become a possibility. However, there’s been no official confirmation that cross-platform play is planned, but the new updates will provide updated generation consoles with a much-needed graphics upgrade.
Cross-Gen Play: A Small Consolation
While full cross-platform between PC and consoles isn’t a thing, there is a bit of cross-generation play for console users. This means that if you have a PlayStation 4, you can play with your friends who also have a PlayStation 4. Similarly, Xbox One players can team up with other Xbox One players. And, according to the games new FAQ. Xbox Series S/X will be able to cross-play with each other, and PS5 will be able to cross-play with PS5.
What About Cross-Save or Cross-Progression?
Unfortunately, the answer here is also no. Because the versions are so different, you can’t transfer your progress from PC to console, or vice-versa. You’ll have to start fresh on each platform.
So, What Can You Do?
Okay, so cross-platform isn’t happening right now. What are your options for surviving the zombie apocalypse with your friends?
- All Play on the Same Platform: This is the simplest solution. Convince your friends to all play on PC or all play on the same console.
- Wait and See: Keep an eye on announcements from the developers and publisher regarding the console version updates. Cross-platform play might become a reality in the future.
- Enjoy Separate Adventures: Embrace the differences! You and your friends can each have your own unique 7 Days to Die experiences on your respective platforms and share your stories.
The Future of Cross-Platform in 7 Days to Die
The future of cross-platform play in 7 Days to Die is uncertain, but not entirely bleak. The console version overhaul is a promising step in the right direction. If the developers manage to bring the console versions closer to the PC version, the possibility of cross-platform play will definitely increase.
However, it’s important to manage your expectations. Even with the updates, cross-platform play is not guaranteed. It will depend on the technical challenges involved and the development team’s priorities.
Other Games to Consider for Cross-Platform Zombie Co-op
If cross-platform play is a must-have for your zombie survival sessions, here are a few other games you might want to check out:
- Back 4 Blood: A spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead with intense co-op zombie shooting action.
- World War Z: Fast-paced zombie hordes and thrilling missions across the globe.
- Dead Island 2: A vibrant and gory zombie slaying experience.
Patience is a Virtue (Especially in the Apocalypse)
While 7 Days to Die isn’t cross-platform right now, don’t lose hope. The console version is getting a much-needed revamp, and who knows what the future holds? In the meantime, gather your friends on the same platform and get ready to build, craft, and survive the zombie apocalypse together! Or, explore other cross-platform zombie games to scratch that co-op itch.
